How to convert a file
Universal file converter is a free tool that changes a file from one format to another in your browser, for images, PDF, Word, audio, video, subtitles and data, without uploading it.
- 1. Add a file
Drop a file on the box, or click it to select one. You convert one file at a time, up to 1 GB.
- 2. Select the format
Select the output in Convert to Format. The list shows only the formats that this type of file can become. For JPEG and WebP, you can also set the quality.
- 3. Convert
Click Convert Now. To turn a PDF into text, the tool reads each page, so a long PDF takes more time.
- 4. Download
Click Download to save the result. Click Clear to start again with a different file.
Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser, on your own device, and the file is not sent to our server. To turn a PDF into Word, text, Markdown or HTML, the page first downloads an open-source text reader (OCR) and its Vietnamese and English language data from jsDelivr and tessdata.projectnaptha.com; your PDF is not sent to them.
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free, with no account and no daily limit, because your own device does the work. Each file can be up to 1 GB, and you convert one file at a time.
Which conversions can it do?
An image becomes PNG, JPEG, WebP, an ICO icon or a one-page PDF. A PDF becomes Word, text, Markdown, HTML, or an image of its first page, and a Word .docx file becomes HTML, text or Markdown. Audio becomes WAV, a video gives its sound as WAV or one frame as PNG or JPG, SRT and VTT subtitles become each other, and CSV and JSON become each other.
Does PDF to Word keep the layout?
No. The tool takes the text of each page, also from scanned pages with text recognition (OCR) in Vietnamese and English, and puts it in an editable Word file as paragraphs. Tables, images, columns and fonts are not kept, so check the text before you use it.
Can it convert a video to MP4, or audio to MP3?
No. From a video it takes only the sound as WAV or one frame as an image, and audio becomes WAV. To turn a MOV or WebM video into MP4, use Compress video: it always saves MP4.
Can it open HEIC photos?
It depends on your browser: the tool opens an image with the browser’s own image reader. Chrome and Edge cannot read HEIC, so the conversion fails there; save the photo as JPEG first.
Why did the conversion fail?
The file can be damaged, protected with a password, or in a format that your browser cannot read, such as HEIC in Chrome or an old Word .doc file. Save it in a common format, such as JPEG, .docx or PDF, and try again.
