Compress video
How to compress a video
Compress video is a free tool that makes MP4, MOV and WebM videos smaller in your browser, so you can send or keep them without uploading them anywhere.
- 1. Add a video
Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM video on the box, or click it to select one. The maximum is 2 GB and 2 hours. Compression starts at once.
- 2. Change the settings if necessary
Move the Quality slider, select the max resolution, or turn off Keep audio. The estimated size changes as you move the slider, and the video is compressed again when you release it.
- 3. Wait for the result
The status line shows the progress and the time left. The video stays on your device during all of the work.
- 4. Check and download
Compare Before, After and Saved, play the compressed preview, then click Download. The file is saved as MP4.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser, on your own device, and the video is not sent to our server. The privacy page lists video compression among the tools that run entirely on your device.
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free, with no account and no daily limit, because your own device does the work. Each video can be up to 2 GB and 2 hours long, and you compress one video at a time.
Which formats are supported?
Input: MP4, MOV or WebM. The result is always an MP4 file with H.264 video, a format that almost all phones and computers can play.
Does compression lower the quality?
Yes, a little. The video is encoded again at a lower bitrate, so some detail is lost. A higher Quality value keeps more detail and makes a larger file, so play the preview before you download.
Why is the result not smaller?
Some videos are already well compressed. The tool shows an estimated size before it starts and the real size after; when the result is larger, lower the quality or select a smaller max resolution.
Does it change the resolution?
Only when the longest side is larger than the max resolution you select. The default is 1920 px (Full HD 1080p), and the video keeps its proportions. Select Original to keep the size.
Can I keep the sound?
Yes. Keep audio is on by default. Some sound formats cannot go into an MP4 file; then the result shows that the audio was not kept. Turn off Keep audio to remove the sound and make the file smaller.
Which browsers can I use?
The tool needs the video encoder that is built into recent browsers (WebCodecs). If your browser does not have it, the tool tells you to try Chrome or Edge.
