How to cut a video

Cut video is a free tool that keeps the parts of an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video that you choose. Almost all of the result is copied from the original instead of encoded again, so it keeps the original quality, and every part you remove makes the file smaller.

  1. 1. Add a video

Drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV video on the box, or click it to select one. The maximum is 2 GB.

  2. 2. Choose what to keep

Right-click the bar where you want to cut (on a phone, touch and hold), then choose Cut here, Delete this part, or delete all before or after that point. A deleted part closes up on the bar. To cut at an exact second, zoom in with the + button or Ctrl + scroll.

  3. 3. Check the result

Click Play the result to watch the file before it is made: the video jumps over the deleted parts. Undo (Ctrl+Z, or ⌘Z on a Mac) takes back the last change.

  4. 4. Save

Click Save. The video is cut and downloads by itself: the kept parts are joined into one file with the format of the original.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The cut runs in your browser, on your own device, and the video is not sent to our server.

Is it free? Is there a limit?

It is free, with no account and no daily limit, because your own device does the work. Each video can be up to 2 GB.

Does cutting lower the quality?

Hardly. The tool copies the picture and the sound of the parts that you keep as they are. Only the frames from the start of a part to the next keyframe, usually a few seconds, are encoded again, at a high bitrate, so the difference is hard to see.

Can I remove a part in the middle?

Yes. Right-click the bar at the start of that part and choose Cut here, do the same at its end, then right-click the part and choose Delete this part. The parts on each side close up and are joined into one file. A thin line marks where a part was deleted; click it to restore the part. If the video cannot start a part exactly at that point, some of the deleted part stays in, shown hatched on the bar, and a line under the bar offers to remove it too by cutting at the next keyframe. A few videos cannot have parts joined at all; the tool then says so and keeps the Save button off.

Does a part start exactly where I set it?

Yes, for H.264, VP8 and VP9 videos in browsers that can encode them, such as Chrome and Edge: the frames from your point to the next keyframe (a full picture that does not need the frames before it) are encoded again, and the rest is copied. Otherwise, for example with an HEVC (H.265) video or keyframes more than 5 minutes apart, the part starts on the keyframe before your point; the extra frames show as a hatched area on the bar, and a line under the bar offers to cut at the next keyframe instead. The end of a part always stays where you set it.

How large is the result?

About the size of the original multiplied by the part of the video that you keep. The tool shows the estimated size before you cut and the real size after.

Which formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. The result keeps the format of the original: an MP4 gives an MP4, and a MOV gives a MOV.

What if my browser cannot play the video?

The tool can still cut it, because the cut does not need to play the video. Use the bar to choose the parts, then cut and download.
