How to turn a PDF into Word
PDF to Word is a free tool that turns a PDF into an editable Word (.docx) file in your browser, without uploading it.
- Add the PDF
One PDF file, up to 1 GB.
- Convert
Choose Easy to edit or Keep layout. If the text in pictures or scans is not Vietnamese or English (Tibetan, Chinese, Thai…), pick its language under Text in pictures and scans. Then click Convert to Word. Pages with text take a moment; scans and pictures with words take longer.
- Check
The line under the button says how many scanned pages, or lines in pictures, were read with OCR. Check those.
- Download
Click Download to save the .docx, or Clear to start again.

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read in your browser, on your own device, and is not sent to our server. Only for a scanned page or words in a picture, the page first downloads an open-source text reader (OCR) and the language data you picked (Vietnamese and English unless you change it) from jsDelivr; your PDF is not sent to it.
Does it keep the layout?
Yes, with Keep layout: the page in Word looks like the PDF. Each line is a text box where it stood, at its size and colour, bold or italic. The pictures, lines and background of the page are one picture behind them, so a single picture cannot be moved on its own. You can change the words of a line, but a paragraph does not reflow. The text is in the nearest font Word has (Times New Roman, Arial…). Open it in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice; Google Docs may not keep the text boxes. For heavy editing choose Easy to edit: the text comes out in reading order, as paragraphs, with Word headings and tables, but pictures, fonts and exact positions are not kept.
Can it read a scanned PDF?
Yes. A page with too little text of its own is read with text recognition (OCR), in the languages picked under Text in pictures and scans (Vietnamese and English unless you change it). With Keep layout, each line read becomes a text box where it stood; a page photographed rather than scanned stays a picture. OCR can make mistakes on blurry scans, stamps and handwriting, so check those pages: the line under the button says how many were read with OCR.
Can it read text inside pictures, such as Tibetan?
Yes. Words a PDF holds as a picture, such as a line of Tibetan pasted in as an image, are read with OCR too and placed among the other lines. Pick their language under Text in pictures and scans: Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Lao, Burmese, Hindi, Sanskrit, Russian, French, German or Spanish, each with English. Tibetan is written in Microsoft Himalaya, the font Windows has for it. Only words on a plain background are read, so a photo stays a photo; a line OCR is unsure of stays a picture. Pick Do not read to keep every picture as it is.
Why are some letters wrong?
Usually because the page was scanned and read with OCR. A PDF made with an old Vietnamese font (TCVN3 or VNI) holds its letters in an old code; the tool sees that and reads such a page with OCR instead.
Is it free? Is there a limit?
It is free, with no account and no daily limit, because your own device does the work. Each PDF can be up to 1 GB, one file at a time. A PDF locked with a password cannot be opened.
Can it turn Word into PDF?
Yes, on another page: Word to PDF. For other formats, use the universal file converter.
