How to turn Word into PDF

Word to PDF turns a Word file into a PDF: free in your browser, or on our server when the pages must look the way Word lays them out.

  1. Add the Word file

One .docx or .doc file: up to 1 GB on your device, 25 MB on our server.

  2. Choose where

On your device: free, nothing is uploaded, text and tables only. On our server: pictures, headers and page numbers kept; free files every day, then credit.

  3. Convert

Click Convert to PDF. On your device the first run loads fonts (about 1 MB); on our server a short document takes a few seconds.

  4. Download

Check the PDF, then click Download to save it, or Clear to start again.

Also works inside Claude: ask it to turn a Word file into a PDF and get a download link. It runs on our server, with the free files and price of the web. How to connect

Frequently asked questions

Not answered here? Ask Yangopen

Is my file uploaded?

Only if you choose On our server. On your device, the default, the Word file is read and the PDF is written in your browser; the fonts and the PDF library come from Yangopen itself, and your file is not sent anywhere. On our server the file is sent over HTTPS, converted in a closed space with no internet access, and deleted as soon as the PDF is sent back. It is not kept, not read by anyone and not used for anything else.

Does the PDF look exactly like my Word file?

On our server, very nearly. The server lays out the pages as Word does, with pictures, headers and footers, page numbers, page breaks and page sizes. Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri and Cambria are replaced by fonts of the same width (Liberation, Carlito, Caladea), so lines break in the same places; a less common font is replaced by a similar one, and lines can move. Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Khmer, Lao, Burmese and Hindi are written in Noto fonts. On your device, no: the tool writes the text again on A4 pages, with headings, lists, quotes and tables, in Tinos, a font the size of Times New Roman; pictures, headers and footers, page numbers, colours, the original fonts and the layout are not kept. For a copy from Word itself, choose File › Save As › PDF.

Can I select and search the text in the PDF?

Yes. The text is real text in a font kept inside the PDF, so it can be selected, searched and copied, and Vietnamese letters stay right. A document with letters that font does not have (Chinese, Japanese, emoji, a sign such as ✓) is saved as pictures of its pages instead, in your device’s own fonts; its text then cannot be selected.

Can it convert an old .doc file?

Yes, on our server: add the file and On our server is chosen for you. On your device only .docx files can be read.

Is it free? Is there a limit?

On your device it is free, with no account and no daily limit, because your own device does the work; each file can be up to 1 GB. On our server some files are free every day, with or without an account; after that each file costs credit, which needs an account. There a file can be up to 25 MB and must convert within 60 seconds: 400 pages of plain text took about 30 seconds. A file that fails is not counted. Prices are on the pricing page.

My document uses VNI-Times or .VnTime. Will it look right?

Not on our server: those old Vietnamese fonts are not there, so the letters come out wrong. Turn the document into Unicode first with VNI & TCVN3 to Unicode, then convert the new file.

Can it turn a PDF into Word?

Yes, on another page: PDF to Word. Markdown and HTML also become PDF in the universal file converter.
