VNI & TCVN3 to Unicode
How to convert old Vietnamese fonts to Unicode
VNI & TCVN3 to Unicode reads text typed in the old .VnTime and VNI-Times fonts through each font's own table and writes it as Unicode, in your browser, so your files stay on your device.
- Paste or drop
Paste the broken text into the box, or drop Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), .txt or .csv files below.
- Check the table
The table is found from the letters and named above the result; if it is wrong, choose TCVN3 or VNI. In a Word or Excel file, each piece of text is read with the table of its own font.
- Copy or download
Copy the Unicode text, or download the converted files: the same name with “-unicode”, the original untouched.
Also works inside Claude: paste the garbled text and ask it to fix the old font. Free. How to connect

Why do letters show as “Céng hßa” or “Coäng hoøa”?
The text was typed in an old Vietnamese font from before Unicode: TCVN3 (.VnTime, .VnArial…) or VNI (VNI-Times…). Those fonts drew Vietnamese letters in place of other characters, so on a computer without the font, or once the text is copied elsewhere, the other characters show. This tool reads each letter through the font's own table and writes it as Unicode.
Does it change the layout of my Word or Excel file?
Only text set in an old font is changed, and that font is changed to Times New Roman or Arial; sizes, bold and italic, tables and pictures stay. Your file is not changed: you download a new copy with “-unicode” in its name. Excel formulas are not changed.
Can it open old .doc and .xls files?
Not directly. Open the file in Word or Excel (or LibreOffice) and save it as .docx or .xlsx, then drop that here.
How does it know the table of pasted text?
Pasted text has lost its font, so the table is guessed from the characters TCVN3 and VNI leave behind, and named above the result. If the guess is wrong, choose the table yourself. Capitals typed in .VnTimeH need “TCVN3 capitals”.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser; text and files are not sent anywhere.
Some text still looks wrong. Why?
Other old encodings (VPS, VISCII, BKHCM) are not read yet, and text already in Unicode is left as it is. If a file still looks wrong, send a sample through the contact page.
