Quick answers
What is Brim?
Brim is a free Mac app that lives in the notch and the menu bar. In the notch: music, volume, brightness, your next meeting, battery, earbuds, timers and a file shelf. Also: screenshots with markup, pinned pictures, copying text from the screen, translating text in the picture, screen recording, holding a key to talk instead of typing, clipboard history and hiding menu bar icons. Everything runs on your Mac.
Which Macs does Brim run on?
Macs with an Apple chip or Intel, macOS 14 or later. Translating in a picture and talk to type need macOS 26. Hiding menu bar icons needs macOS 27. On a Mac without a notch, Brim uses a small area at the top center of the screen.
Does Brim cost anything?
No. Brim is free, with no ads and no account.
How do I install Brim?
Click Download for Mac on the Brim page. Open Brim.dmg, drag Brim into Applications, then open Brim. Apple has checked the app (it is notarized), so macOS opens it without a warning. Brim has no Dock icon: find it in the notch and in the menu bar.
Which permissions does Brim need?
Each feature needs only its own. Brim’s Settings show which feature still lacks a permission, with an Allow button.
- Accessibility: volume and brightness keys, scrolling, switching Spaces, mouse buttons, the keyboard lock, putting your words into the text field when you talk to type.
- Screen Recording: snipping, recording, copying and translating text on the screen.
- Microphone: talk to type, and sound in a recording when you turn it on.
- Calendars: your next event.
- Camera: the mirror in the notch.
What are the default shortcuts?
⇧⌘1 to snip, ⇧⌘2 to pin, ⇧⌘6 to copy text from the screen, F2 to record the screen. Hold 🎤 (F5) to talk instead of typing. Change or turn off each one in Brim’s Settings. On a Mac keyboard, F2 may need fn.
Talk to type does not work.
It needs macOS 26 and the Microphone permission. The first time, macOS downloads the speech model for your language, so it needs the internet once. If the talk key is fn (🌐), set “Press 🌐 key to” to “Do Nothing” in System Settings › Keyboard.
Why does keep-awake with the lid closed ask for a password?
macOS always sleeps when the lid closes. So Brim runs macOS’s own pmset command, as you would in Terminal, and that needs an administrator password. Turn the feature off or quit Brim, and the Mac sleeps as usual again. Do not put a Mac that is awake into a closed bag.
How do I update Brim?
Brim asks GitHub for a newer version at launch and once a day. When there is one, Brim’s Settings show a download button. Open the file and drag Brim into Applications to replace the old one. Your settings stay.
How do I remove Brim?
Click Brim’s icon in the menu bar, choose Quit Brim, then drag Brim from Applications to the Trash. To remove pinned pictures too, delete the Brim folder in Library › Application Support. Pictures and videos you saved stay in Pictures › Brim and Downloads.
Does Brim send my data anywhere?
No. Snipping, reading text, translating and listening all run on your Mac. Brim goes online only to ask GitHub for a newer version. Details on the Privacy page.
